I’m so thrilled Long Story Short is finally out on Netflix and you can binge the first season! We’re already at work on season two and I hope we can make more. I fell in love with this show from the first moment I read Raphael’s description of it.
(my first sketch!)
If you’re enjoying the episodes, please watch the end credits (with adorable designs by Maureen Kuo) and note how many talented artists poured their heart into creating this. Best crew ever.
Now I’d love to show you a little peek at my sketches and concept art. (Please don’t repost anywhere, thank you)! : ) I won’t post any spoilers here, so no worries if you haven’t seen the show yet.
I’m better at drawing trees than houses… but I wanted to quickly capture the feeling of the homes we grew up in and around in the Bay Area….
Fun to compare this to some final versions of this background, by art director Alison Dubois (I think Alabaster Pizzo worked on this one too):
We really wanted to maintain the charm and looseness of hand-drawn artwork. Surprisingly difficult to do in animation.
When Raphael described the family for the new show he was developing, I immediately pictured these faces with round noses:
Then fooled around with some other options:
I wanted them to be really warm, personal, cute, and evoke the Sunday funnies I’d read as a kid. Lots of scribbly lines!
A good excuse to doodle handsome dudes.
So much of the show is about childhood memories and adult disappointments, I really connected to it. One of the first things I sketched was Avi waiting in his car in the parking lot…
